Coconut oil is a wonderful superfood that I use in the kitchen every week. I use it for both cooking and baking. It has amazing health benefits. It contains a unique combination of fatty acids with medicinal properties, it helps burn fat faster, helps kill bacteria and block infections.
BUT, coconut oil should not be used only in the kitchen. We should all know that this tropical beauty has its use and benefits in your bathroom, too.
Therefore, I´d like to explore, with you, coconut oil uses in body care and cosmetics.
1. OIL PULLING
I had no clue what oil pulling is until I discovered it recently. Oil pulling is a way to cleanse your mouth. It can be quite annoying thing to do, but if done in a long run, it will benefit your mouth flora. Here´s how you do it:
1. In the morning before you eat, take 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil
2. Swish it around your mouth for about 15-20 minutes.
3. Spit out the oil (don´t swallow it, because it is full of bacteria)
4. Brush your teeth.
There are couple of ways to use coconut oil as a hair treatment. It can be used as a pre-wash or post-wash treatment.
1. Hair Conditioner
Coconut oil is the only oil that reduces the protein loss. Protein loss is responsible for hair dryness and hair breakage. Coconut oil can be used as a leave-in conditioner, as an intensive conditioner for couple of hours or overnight or as a pre-wash conditioner
Leave-in conditioner: Take a little bit of coconut oil (for short hair 1/4 tsp, for longer hair 1/2 tsp) and spread it evenly all over the hair, avoid the scalp as it can appear to oily afterwards. Pay attention to ends, smooth through hair and style as you wish.
Intensive conditioner: Apply warm oil at night and wash your hair in the morning. You can repeated this every week for healthy hair.
Pre-wash conditioner: Take max 1/2 tbsp of coconut oil, apply it on your hair, start from the roots and make it down to the ends. Leave the oil on for about 10 minutes. Rinse your hair well and wash with shampoo.
2. Hair Growth
Coconut oil is effective and cheaper solution if you have thin hair and you want it to grow more. It can help not only for the hair growth but it also makes your hair longer and thicker. It has essential nutrients like lauric acid, which helps the overall hair health.
How to ensure the hair growth with coconut oil? You will need about 1 tsp of coconut oil. Massage it into the scalp with gentle pressure for about 10 minutes, 3 times per week. The oil helps to improve the blood circulation, which results in hair growth. After the massage, wait about 10 minutes before washing it out.
Fatty acids (lauric and capric acid) in the coconut oil have strong antimicrobial and antifungal proporties that help to kill the fungus as well as viruses and bacteria that are hiding on your scalp.
There are many shampoos out there that promise to get rid off dandruff. I personally think that those shampoos have many chemicals that might be actually harmful to your skin. I really think you should try out the coconut oil treatment if you have dandruff.
For an intensive dandruff treatment it is recommended to mix some of the essential oils – 5 drops (lavender, hyme, or tea tree oil) with 2 tsps of coconut oil. Massage this mixture int your scalp. After the massage, cover your hair with the shower cap and if possible use a hair dryer to heat the cap. After that remove the cap and wash with the shampoo. Repeat this 2-3 times per week.
Take a small amount of coconut oil (1/4 tsp), spread it from root to tips. Blow dry your hair and style.
3. SKIN MOISTURIZER
I guess this is the most common use of coconut oil. After shower, apply it to your skin all over the body. It makes your skin soft and shiny. It tends to reduce scars and stretch marks as well as rejuvenate the skin. Even though it has a greasy consistency it quickly absorbs into the skin.
Coconut oil can be also applied on the face. Use very small amount (a pea size) of coconut oil and apply around the eyes and face. You can use it for your lips too.
You can use coconut oil in your bedroom too. Coconut oil is a great massage oil as well as great lubricant for your intimate moments 🙂
Many people use coconut oil as a body lotion after shaving the legs, which is absolutely a great thing to do. However, coconut oil is also a great helper before shaving. Applying oil before shaving helps your skin to get softer and therefore less irritated after shaving.
5. REMEDY FOR NAIL FUNGUS
Again, the fatty acids that are in the coconut oil help to remove the fungus.
Take a bit of coconut oil and rub it onto the affected are. Let it absorb and dry. Repeat 2-3 times daily for several weeks.
6. TREATMENTS FOR RASHES AND BURNS
Coconut oil is a very helpful remedy if you have a rash or you burned your skin. Apply a little bit of the oil on the skin – the affected area and let it absorb. You can mix the oil with other essential oils too. As the coconut oil is safe for children, you can use it as a remedy for a diaper rash.
I´ve experienced that many makeup removers do not remove the makeup properly. If that´s your case too, try the coconut oil! Wash your face first and then apply the oil on the cotton pad and remove the rest of the makeup.
I´m sure there are many other ways to use the coconut oil in your bathroom. So if you discover something else, please share with me. I´m happy to learn something more about it.
